How Credit Card Affects Car Insurance Rates

Many people know that many lenders use the information provided in your credit report to come to a decision whether to give you credit or not? But it is a regular practice in some states that the insurance companies also go through your credit report. It definitely affects your ability to buy or auto insurance coverage. It may also show its affect on the premium you are going to pay.

You may consider the following scenarios for instance.

About two years back, you stayed unemployed for about 6 months, which made you lag behind in your credit card payments even before you are able to get some new job. Your auto insurance rates are soaring high and you are not able to file a claim against your policy.

It’s been your regular practice that you pay bills on time and you have never asked for a credit paying only cash. You always wonder why this problem is. Very similar to that, when you are in the process of applying for a mortgage or some credit card, lack of credit history can really pose some serious threat with the record of absence of payment of monthly credit payments. This may result in the most unwanted consequence of making you the unknown quantity. Many people are under the wrong notion that only their driving record is important, but the actual truth is along with the driving record many companies take credit histories into consideration.

 What’s the score here?

Insurers always take various factors into consideration before they decide to insure someone. These factors also determine the rates. For an instance, if you happen to be applying for auto insurance your insurer might take factors like your age, your driving record, the make and model of your car, and the number of insurance claimed filed by you in the past into consideration. But it was since the last ten years that these companies also started using the factor of your credit history. Its insurers belief that if your credit history is healthier then you are less likely to file some claim against the things like your auto insurance policy or home owners insurance policy. They also believe that it makes you the customer who regularly pays the required payments of insurance premiums.

If it is the case of your credit history along with all the other required factors insist that you are a good and responsible driver, you are likely to be offered a very low premium. But if it’s the case of a tinted credit history of you, or even with very less or no credit history, you have to pay higher premiums or even the coverage may be rejected.

How can you improve the score?

If your coverage is rejected due to the poor credit history you may avail the privilege of a free copy of credit report from the bureau by the name federal Fair Credit Reporting Act. If you are denied insurance due to your poor credit history, here are some of the steps to be taken. Make our credit history very clean, regularly pay the bills, avoid spending more than you can and stop receiving the notifications\s to pay high interest on your credit cards.

If you don’t happen to have a credit you have to get some. If that’s the case of lack of history that is stopping you from availing the benefits better use the credit card regularly to prove that you are not an unknown quantity. At the same time avoid spending more than what you can. Most important of all is pay your bills regularly. Regularly, that is once in every year you have to get the reports of you credit history. You also have to remember that information in one report may not be the same as the information in the other. Make sure that the information provided is perfect and rectify any mistakes by the creditor or even the bureaus.

Look around for several types of insurance. Always bear in mind that rates for the same coverage can be different for different kinds. To save money always go for high deductibles. For several insurances like homeowner insurance and the auto insurance, higher deductibles are capable to lower your premium costs. Always be sure that your deductible must be covered with a claim.

These days credit reports may be an industry standard. Always make sure your credit works for you, which makes you, pay lower premiums.
